Funerals

What does a funeral celebrant do?

As a funeral celebrant, my role is to offer bereaved families a heartfelt funeral ceremony that reflects the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and their family. The ceremony will focus on celebrating and reflecting the life of the deceased and the tribute will be respectful and highly personal.

I can come to your home and share a cup of tea, you can explain the photo on the mantlepiece and have an ordinary conversation about planning this extraordinary occasion.

With growing demand for celebrant-led ceremonies, families regularly express heartfelt thanks for a ceremony that provides the funeral that they believe the deceased would have wanted.

What’s involved

You can celebrate you loved ones life in any way you choose.

As part of the ceremony you can sit in silence, play music or chat amongst yourselves. Why not  ask relatives and friends to talk about the person’s life then have a space where everyone can come up and share stories of your loved ones dreadful jokes! You can definitely laugh!

Whilst not a religious ceremony as such, religious content may be included, such as prayers or hymns. You can light candles, place flowers or even ask everyone to wear purple or football shirts.

As a former music and drama teacher, I can advise you about poems and music. They are the most emotive elements of the ceremony and can stay in the hearts and minds of those attending indefinitely.

With gentle questioning, I find out about your loved one’s life before writing their eulogy. I always give you a draft of the ceremony so you can add more memories and ideas until it is perfect for you.

What next

Contact me directly or give my details to your funeral director. Let me know how you would like the funeral and I will provide a beautiful, memorable ceremony for your loved one.

If you are booking me via a funeral director, please ask them to check my availability prior to making the final arrangements.

Funeral Ceremonies Helpsheet

I've been delighted to receive many letters of thanks from families who have chosen me for their unique Funeral ceremony. Here are a few examples:

The ceremony was perfect for my brother. I didn’t know that I could be so moved. Thank you for your help in choosing the music and the poems. It made the whole process simple and beautiful.

Thank you for your guidance and the dignified way in which the service for Mum was carried out. I am sure Mum would have been very happy indeed and many people have said what a lovely service it was.

From a local family

Sarah Chapman the Celebrant who carried out the service on my behalf, was absolutely brilliant. I don’t think I could ask for, or get, any better. It is my intention, when my time comes, to have the same sort of ceremony and Sarah!

Thank you from a family from Plymouth
